About the Composition

David J. Westfall composed the March of Freedom when he was just sixteen years old. As he gained skill as an orchestrator through his academic studies at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and his experience as a U.S. Army arranger, it took the shape that it is in today. The march was first performed in a public park in Heidelberg, Germany by the USAREUR (33rd Army) Band and was dedicated to the band and its director in the late 1960’s. After many years of storage, David shared his handwritten score and parts with the United States Army Field Band who performed it for the first time domestically. A cassette tape of the march was sent to him. That recording remained a family keepsake until the composer’s passing in 2022, at which time it was played at his memorial service and posted to a memorial webpage.
